We are a child protection organization that has been providing development cooperation and humanitarian aid since 1978. Our work focuses on education, food security, livelihood support, and child protection.

We support children and young people, their families, and entire village communities in over 30 countries around the world in a variety of ways. The specific nature of our project work depends on the circumstances in each country.

Our work is made possible by three sources of funding: sponsorships, other donations, and public funds. Our sponsorship-funded projects are designed for the long term. They are characterized by particularly close collaboration between our partner organizations in the respective project country and the local communities. Donation-based and publicly funded projects have a shorter duration. Due to the limited timeframe, these projects require more intensive planning and support on our part. In all projects, ChildFund plays two specific roles: First, raising funds so that the project work can be implemented at all. And second, bringing together and building bridges between those who provide money and expertise and those who lack these resources. The goal is to enable the greatest possible mutual benefit from the collaboration and to advance our projects in the most effective way.

In Germany, ChildFund is a member of VENRO, the umbrella organization for German non-governmental organizations working in development policy and humanitarian aid. At the international level, ChildFund is a founding member of the ChildFund Alliance, established in 2002, a network of eleven child protection organizations that supports projects in over 70 countries. This membership also gives us access to other initiatives at the international level. In addition, ChildFund is part of the Joining Forces network initiative—an alliance of the six largest child protection organizations in the world, which have been implementing specific projects together for several years.

What sets our work apart is our close connection to the people in our projects. Especially in long-standing projects, our close collaboration has fostered very strong ties with local communities. These strong interpersonal relationships and mutual acceptance give us personal access to the project countries that others can hardly achieve. Furthermore, as a medium-sized organization, we are more agile and flexible than many other organizations. This allows us to adapt more quickly to changing conditions and focus on tailored, highly effective solutions that drive long-term change.

Our goal is to bring about lasting improvements in the future prospects of children in need, their families, and their entire communities. This enables them to exercise their rights, overcome poverty and dependency, and lead independent and self-determined lives.

To ensure that our aid is used in a highly targeted manner, we rely on close collaboration with local partner organizations in all the countries where we operate, so that our assistance meets the specific needs on the ground. Furthermore, all our support is guided by the principle of helping people help themselves. This ensures that the people in our projects benefit from long-term and lasting changes and, in the long run, no longer depend on aid but can live independently and self-determinedly. Our transparent and responsible handling of donations is also confirmed by the DZI Donation Seal, which we have been awarded continuously since 1995 by the German Central Institute for Social Issues.
