Hunger and contaminated water are among the most common causes of long-term health problems and serious illnesses worldwide. The consequences of malnutrition and undernourishment are particularly severe for children, as nutrient deficiencies significantly impair their mental and physical development.

In addition to general food shortages in many countries, the effects of climate change—in the form of droughts and aridity—further exacerbate food insecurity for many people. Regular meals and access to clean water are often unavailable. That is why we are working in various countries to protect the natural livelihoods of families and communities. Through efficient and sustainable agriculture, the cultivation of crisis-resistant crops, and secure access to clean and sufficient water, they are protected from hunger through regular and healthy meals.

Education is a child’s right. And education is the key to change. A good education opens up opportunities and lays the foundation for a self-determined future. Furthermore, education protects against poverty, oppression, and exploitation, and promotes health and sustainability. That is why we are committed to improving access to education for all. We strengthen inclusive teaching, establish sustainable and age-appropriate educational programs, and are committed to ensuring that girls and young women, in particular, receive a quality education.

To achieve this, we build schools and equip them not only with teaching and learning materials, but also with desks and chairs for the classrooms as well as toilets. We also advocate for high-quality vocational training and further educational opportunities for adolescents and young adults to give them the best possible start to their professional lives.

To support people in crisis and emergency situations, we stand by their side with humanitarian aid and provide them with the essentials. Through our emergency aid, we are active where swift and flexible action is required—for example, following natural disasters or during times of war. We provide vital assistance and ensure that children and families have access to basic necessities.

Our focus is on providing food, hygiene supplies, and medicines; creating safe shelters for displaced people; supplying warm clothing and offering psychosocial support; as well as ensuring safe access to quality education and protecting children.

Children need a supportive and safe environment to develop and reach their full potential. This is only possible if families have a steady income and secure livelihoods. Through our work, we support families and communities in overcoming poverty and achieving financial independence.

For poverty is more than just a lack of income. Poverty has many socio-ecological dimensions: access to services and social protection measures, the ability to express opinions and make decisions, bargaining power, social status, decent work, and opportunities. Poverty is also the root cause of many human rights and labor rights violations. For example, child labor, forced labor, and human trafficking are closely linked to poverty. That is why we are committed to securing incomes and establishing sustainable employment opportunities. Because only through secure livelihoods can families and communities build a bright future for themselves.
